Moscow. Farid Akbarov – APA. A press conference has today been held in Moscow on prospects of developing Azerbaijani-Russian trade ties on the background of the US and EU Economic sanctions.

Making a speech at the conference, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu noted that Baku hosted the meeting of the Azerbaijan-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on September 15, APA’s Moscow correspondent reports.

“The meeting was attended by five deputy ministers, committee chairpersons of the State Duma and the Federation Council and vice speakers from Russia. President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation from Russia. The meeting of the intergovernmental commission was very productive. The topical issues on relations between the two countries were discussed. The commission’s agenda was quite expansive. The main topic of discussion was of course exports of agricultural products from Azerbaijan to Russia. Different ministries of the two countries held extensive discussions in this regard”, he said.

He stressed the importance of regulating the transportation of agricultural products from Azerbaijan to Russia: “Azerbaijan is fully self-sustaining in agricultural products. Logistics between Azerbaijan and Russia is at a very high level today. However, some administrative problems come about at times while transporting products. The obstacles created by the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-Being (Rospotrebnadzor) are of such problems. Examination of the quality of products is normal, but their delivery to Russian markets needs to be facilitated. In this regard, there are relevant state mechanisms, which were also discussed at the meeting of the intergovernmental commission. How many agricultural products does Russia need? Azerbaijani farmers must be assured that Russia will buy their products. The Russian government must guarantee that the Azerbaijani farmers’ labor will not go to waste. All possible solutions and mechanisms of these issues were a topic of discussion at the meeting of the intergovernmental commission”.

Bulbuloglu said the export of poultry meat and egg apart from fruits and vegetables from Azerbaijan to Russia was discussed as well.

Dmitry Savalyev, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Financial Markets, said in his speech a great chance has come up for Azerbaijan to make its way into Russia’s financial market: “Azerbaijan is a unique country, and it’s currently undergoing a great development, the like of which is impossible to be seen in any of post-Soviet countries. Azerbaijani products outdo Central Asian and Chinese products in quality. We’d love to see these products in greater amounts in Russia markets”.

The deputy invited Azerbaijani banks to Russian markets as well: “Those who say Azerbaijan’s Manat is “the golden Manat” have a reason to say so. Azerbaijan’s national currency is quite stable. It’s even possible to use Manat or Rubl for payments in the trade turnover between the two countries”.

Member of the Public Chamber, politician Sergei Markov said in his speech Russia is successfully cooperating with Azerbaijan in oil, energy, and military-technical spheres: “The sanctions imposed by the West on Russia stems from the policy of hostility. As partner of Russia, Azerbaijan can play a far more active role with its quality products in Russia’s great markets. Azerbaijan is rich with agricultural products and capable of supplying Russia with them. This factor would have a positive effect on Azerbaijan’s economy, too”.
