Baku-APA. Ukrainian leaders understand that the crisis in Donetsk and Lugansk regions cannot be settled only by force, Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko said at a meeting with Jeffrey Feltman, the visiting U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, on Wednesday, APA reports quoting ITAR-TASS.

“People in Donetsk and Lugansk want peace. Our desire to implement the peace plan which we have proposed is determining our actions. We realize the solution cannot be found exclusively by military means,” Poroshenko said.

At the same time, the Ukrainian president made a fresh attempt to blame Russia for supplying the militias with “latest weapons.” He stressed the need to investigate the Boeing 777 crash and urged the world community to help Ukraine in releasing Ukrainian hostages.

The Russian side has repeatedly refuted allegations that Russia is supplying weapons to the militias in southeast Ukraine.

On behalf of the U.N. secretary-general, Jeffrey Feltman thanked President Poroshenko for his peace initiatives and invited him to attend a session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month.
