Azerbaijan to tighten punishments for forcing to religious faith and breaking rights of citizens under pretext of implementation of religious activities

The Parliament told APA that the Criminal Code’s Articles #167-1 and 168 have been proposed amendments.

According to the amendment proposed to the Article #167.1.1, those who force individuals to practice any religion (religious trends), conduct religious rituals, take part in religious activity or religious education shall be fined with AZN 5000 up to AZN 10000 and 6-year imprisonment. The valid fine is AZN 3000 to AZN 5000 or 2-year reformatory works or 2-year imprisonment.

According to the amendment proposed to the Article #167.1.2, those who force individuals to be a member of any religious organization or who prevent individuals to leave religious organizations shall be fined with AZN 5000 up to AZN 10000 and 5-year imprisonment. The valid fine is AZN 3000 to AZN 5000 or 2-year imprisonment.

According to the amendment proposed to the Article #168, creation of a group which are carrying out activity under pretext of distribution of religious faiths and implementation of religious activities and by this illegally interfere in social order, or harming health of citizens or breaking rights of citizens irrespective form infringement, and also distracting citizens from performance of duties provided by the law and as well as a management of such group or participation in it shall be fined with AZN 10000 up to AZN 15000 and 8-year imprisonment. The valid fine is AZN 7000 to AZN 9000 or 2-year imprisonment.

The amendments are scheduled to be discussed at the autumn session of the Parliament.
