Abu Shagor was forced into a car by unidentified gunmen near his house in al-Andalus region of Tripoli on Tuesday afternoon and taken to an unknown location, according to lawmaker Essam al- Naasse.
Shortly before the gunmen arrived, Abu Shagor received an anonymous call asking him to leave the house, but he refused, Naasse said. It was not immediately known who was behind the kidnapping.
In late June Abu Shagor was elected as the deputy prime minister of Libya's first transitional government since 2011, when former leader Muammar Ghaddafi was toppled. He was also elected as a lawmaker in the new parliament House of Representatives.
Libya has been plagued by kidnappings and assassinations since the downfall of Gaddafi's government. The recent fightings between armed Islamist groups and pro-secular militias have killed at least 97 people, aggravating the security situation in Tripoli.
