Late on Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham hit out at the violent attack in Beit Hanoun which claimed the lives of at least 16 people, among them seven children, and injured more than 200 others.

“Today it has been evident more than ever before that the Zionists spare no crime against the defenseless people of Gaza due to their savage nature and desperation,” Afkham stated.

She added that the United Nations is responsible for such war crimes against the defenseless Gazans.

Afkham stated that “the UN and its subsidiary bodies are directly responsible for the continuation of war crimes against the oppressed and defenseless people in the Gaza Strip,” including the attack on a school under the supervision of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement following the deadly incident, condemning the attack and calling for the killings to stop.

“Many have been killed – including women and children, as well as UN staff,” Ban said in the statement, adding, “Circumstances are still unclear. I strongly condemn this act.”

Gaza’s health official, Ashraf al-Kidra, said the victims, who were killed in the Israeli attack on the UN-run school, were among hundreds of people seeking shelter from Israel’s offensive in the area, adding that more dead bodies and wounded people were expected to arrive at nearby hospitals.

It was the latest attack in a series of assaults carried out by the Tel Aviv regime on schools and hospitals in the besieged coastal enclave.

The number of Palestinians killed in 17 days of Israeli offensive in the besieged Gaza Strip has risen to nearly 800.

Reports said on Thursday that more than 5,050 Palestinians have been wounded as Israeli tanks and jets continue to hit the enclave.
