Ukraine’s parliament-appointed Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has touched upon the issue of the status of the Russian language in the country at a government session in Kharkiv.
“If it is necessary in the framework of the Constitution to introduce a special status for the Russian language and languages of other national minorities in the country, I think this should be a matter of national discussion and decision-making,” Yatsenyuk said.
The prime minister noted that it was necessary to send the draft constitution to the Venice Commission for consideration as soon as possible. The Venice Commission is an advisory body to the European Council on constitutional law.
“Even if they are certain disagreements on the issue between different political forces, the draft constitution should be sent to our European partners in order to receive feedback and complete the constitutional reform in Ukraine,” Yatsenyuk added.
