In his interview with Welt am Sonntag, Oettinger distracted the EU member states from reducing contacts with Russia in energy sector and urged to seek for ways to diversify energy supply.

The EU Commissioner noted that Europe should help Ukraine in search of opportunities to pay off debts for Russian gas. Otherwise, a new “gas war” can start between Russia and the West.

“It is important to overcome possible gas crisis and ensure energy security for winter. If we don’t help Ukraine to pay $2 billion, Russia will not deliver gas to this country”, Oettinger said.

Oettinger recalled that Ukraine is an important transit country and doesn’t rule out the beginning of a difficult controlled process that can affect Germany.
