Baku-APA. “We should regularly improve our laws and judicial practice and bring it to conformity with the precedent law of the European Court of Human Rights. Our highest goal is to ensure the rule of law, protection of the rights and freedoms of our citizens,” chairman of Azerbaijan's Supreme Court Ramiz Rzayev said in his exclusive interview to Azertac State Agency, APA reports.
Noting that about 100 000 cases are pending at the European Court of Human Rights, Ramiz Rzayev said more than half of the complaints had been filed from 4 countries.
"They are Russia, Italy, Ukraine and Serbia. Looking into the statistics of the court in 2013, we can see that the European Court of Human Rights revealed violations in 119, 118, 83, 65 decisions passed by some European countries. Comparing with the European states, which population is approximately equal to Azerbaijan, 5061, 1209, 990, 726 complaints were filed against these states in 2013, while 325 complaints were filed against the Azerbaijani state," he said.
Chairman of the Supreme Court said the European Court of Human Rights revealed violations of various clauses of the Convention in 40, 32, 25, 22 decisions passed by various states.
He said violations were revealed only in 8 decisions passed by the Azerbaijani state.
“3rd and 6th articles of the Convention, 1st article of Protocol 1 were violated in 6 out of 8 decisions. I would like to note that the violations in two of these decisions were connected with the non-execution of the court decisions. Compared to 2012, fewer violations were revealed. Of course, we should not be content with the fact that our performance improved significantly in 2013,” he said.
