Baku-APA. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Thursday pledged to enhance his country's fight against corruption, APA reports quoting locxal meida.

"We need to declare a resolute war on corruption. Next year we will put this question bluntly," Yanukovych told a meeting of the Council of Regions here.

Describing corruption as "one of the key challenges" to Ukraine's economy and social welfare, Yanukovych promised to strengthen the responsibility of officials for acts of corruption and enhance punishment for bribery.

The president said that the authorities are mulling to set up a special disciplinary mechanism to prevent malpractices and tackle corruption cases.

In particular, the government will focus on rooting out corruption in law enforcement and regulatory spheres, Yanukovych added.

In a global index of perceived official corruption conducted by Transparency International, Ukraine ranked 144 among 177 countries worldwide.
