Baku-APA. Foreign visitors wishing to attend the Winter Olympics in Sochi will be offered simplified visa procedures, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

Most foreign citizens need tourist visas to enter Russia, but those with Olympic tickets will be able to use special "Olympic windows" at Russian embassies and consulates around the world, the ministry said.

Visitors to Sochi will be exempt from the need to provide confirmation of a hotel booking and will not have to wait in regular visa queues, the ministry said.

President Vladimir Putin signed a decree in May waiving visa requirements entirely for athletes and their accredited entourages.

Thousands of visitors from around the world are expected to attend the Olympics at the Black Sea resort, which take place from February 7-23. It is the first time Russia has staged the Winter Games.
