Chair of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher has met a group of political refugees from the South Azerbaijan, spokesman for the South Azerbaijani National Resistance Organization Babek Chalabiyanli told APA. According to him, the Californian congressman was thanked for supporting the Azerbaijani Turks and raising the issue at the Congress on holding a referendum for self-determination of Azerbaijanis living in Iran: “The Congressman said he was pleased to personally hear about the situation of the Azerbaijanis living in Iran and noted that he would raise the issue of South Azerbaijan at the U.S. Congress again. Rohrabacher wanted to keep in touch with us to get more exact information about the Azerbaijanis living in Iran.”
Chalabiyanli said that U.S. Congressman touched on the right to self-determination of the Azerbaijanis living in Iran: “Rohrabacher noted that we need to work together to realize the right to democracy and self-determination in the South Azerbaijan and chanted "Freedom for the South Azerbaijan and freedom for everyone!”.
Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) sent a letter to Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton urging the United States to back freedom for Azeris from Iran: “Their homeland was divided by Russia and Persia in 1828, without their consent. We should support their right to determine their future through a referendum.” Following this, the U.S. Congressman submitted relevant resolution to the House of Representatives.
