Baku. Lachin Sultanova-APA. “There are a lot reasons for death of children in Azerbaijan. One of them is linked with mothers’ health. Azerbaijan is still anxious about maternal health and we are taking measures on this field. One of the factors influenced on maternal health is an early marriage. Unfortunately, number of early marriages in comparison with soviet period has increased,” Mohamed Bendriss Alami, UNICEF Representative to Azerbaijan said an interview to Azerbaijani Women Journalists’ Union. He said that marriage of teenagers is early, nevertheless, Convention on the Rights of the Child envisages conclusion of childhood period at the age of 18.
“If girls marry at the ages of 15-17, they are left without education. They become pregnant, when their organism is not ready for it and it increases death risk of unborn child. Early–married girls face violation in the family and live in poverty. Early marriage is a chain of unpleasant developments linked with each other”, he said.
To him, weak feeding is one of factors, which has impact on maternal health.
“Those, who were underfed, cannot feed their children. Mothers, who were underfed during pregnancy, their children, need treatment. Mothers, who do not follow pregnancy process, can face negative results after it. Moreover, tetanus, pneumonia and other diseases can cause problems to maternal health”, he said. Mr. Alami said that Health Ministry was investigating reasons of death of children and stressed the importance of elimination of the problem.
