NATO Deputy Secretary General Claudio Bisogniero: “The peaceful solution to Nagorno Karabakh conflict is the interest of regional stability”

Baku. Lachin Sultanova–APA. “NATO attaches great importance to relations with Azerbaijan”, said NATO Deputy Secretary General Claudio Bisogniero at the briefing he held after his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov.

“NATO appreciates reforms in Azerbaijan, including in the defense field and reconfirms its support to this process”.

The NATO official said within his visit to Azerbaijan he met with Defense Minister Safar Abiyev, Minister of Emergency Situations Kamaladdin Heydarov, Minister of National Security Eldar Mahmudov and Vice Speaker of the Parliament and discussed a number of issues of common interests. Bisogniero said NATO and Azerbaijan had fruitful cooperation in many areas and reminded that Azerbaijan’s joining the Partnership for Peace Program will remark 15 years in 2009. He particularly appreciated the Azerbaijan’s contribution to NATO-led ISAF operations in Afghanistan providing for support to Afghan government to reach stability in the country.

The guest said during the meetings he held in Baku they focused on Nagorno Karabakh problem too. “For NATO, the peaceful solution to Nagorno Karabakh conflict is the interest of Azerbaijan, the interest of Armenia and the interest of regional stability. NATO supports efforts conducted by the Minsk Group. We are encouraged with some progresses we see in the process”.
