Baku. Elnur Mammadli –APA. Azerbaijan celebrates the National Salvation Day on June 15, when Heydar Aliyev was elected the chairman of Azerbaijani parliament. 16 years ago Surat Huseynov’s military base rose in rebel on June 4 in Ganja and demanded resignation of Milli Majlis speaker Isa Gambar and Prime Minister Panah Huseyn, which led Azerbaijan to anarchy. Rebels took power in Ganja and moved toward Baku.
Authorities of that time led by the Azerbaijan Popular Front and Musavat Party invited Heydar Aliyev to Baku to find a way out from the situation. Heydar Aliyev returned to Baku on June 9 and immediately left for Ganja to negotiate with Surat Huseynov. On June 15, Heydar Aliyev was elected the chairman of Azerbaijani parliament. As a result of popular vote, the peoples showed distrust to President Abulfaz Elchibey and Heydar Aliyev was elected the president of the country. In a short time, Heydar Aliyev put down a revolt and reached ceasefire with Armenia. June 15 is celebrated as a National Salvation Day by the parliament’s decision adopted in 1997.
