Republic AIDS Center recorded 441 new AIDS-infected patients in Azerbaijan in 2007. Health Ministry’s press service told APA that 437 of them are Azerbaijanis and four are foreigners.
382 (87.4%) out of 437 recorded patients are men and 55 (12.6%) are women. The majority of AIDS-infected patients – 271 (62%) acquired the infection by drug injection.
48 people died of AIDS in Azerbaijan last year. 1379 facts on HIV-infection were recorded in Republic AIDS Center in 1987-2007. 59 of them are foreigners and 1320 are Azerbaijanis. 1117 (84.6%) of HIV-infected Azeri patients are men and 203 are women. Totally 195 died of AIDS, 294 of HIV-infected patients have progressed to the stage of AIDS. Out of 1320 Azerbaijanis 790 (59.8%) acquired the infection by drug injection, 281 (21.3%) as a result of heterosexual contact, 12 (0.9%) homosexual contacts, 11 (0.8%) cases are mother-to-child transmission, 1 (0.1%) was infected parenterally and 1 (0.1%) after blood transfusion. It was impossible to define the way of infection of 224 (17%) people. Out of 1320 HIV patients 209 (15.8%) were infected abroad. Facts on HIV were recorded in 416 families in 1992-2007. In 11 families father, mother and child, in 99 families husband and wife, in 285 families only man and in 21 families only woman were infected. /APA/
