Armenian President Robert Kocharian has issued a decree on dismissal of Grigor Arutyunyan, deputy director of the Armenian National Security Service.
Many attributed Arutyunyan’s absence in the list of the awarded on December 20, 2006- the Day of National Security- to the fact of government dissatisfaction with him.
Then by the behest of the president, the security agencies tried to “hit” all the officers who feel sympathy for the United States but the intelligence leaked to the media.
The media probed the cue and found out that the security agencies were eavesdropping on the Defense and Foreign Ministries’ officers who had been trained in western countries.
A source in the defense Ministry of Armenia said the then minister Serj Serkisian suggested the idea of following officers who participated in various courses within the NATO Individual Partnership Program.
Also, at the recent government meeting chaired by Robert Kocharian, Serj Serkisian said it was expedient to evade appointing the western-trained officers to senior posts of the security agencies.
He explained that in the event of territorial conflicts with Azerbaijan and Georgia, expansion of cooperation with Euro-Atlantic structures may weaken Russia’s historical support. /APA/
