World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31. The member states of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. It draws global attention to the tobacco epidemic and to the preventable death and disease it causes. It aims to reduce the 3.5 million yearly deaths from tobacco related health problems. This campaign is held under slogan ”Free tobacco environment” this year, UN Azerbaijan Representation told APA.
World Health Organization and Independent Research Centre for UN Department for Public Information plan organizing several actions on the day of World Anti-Smoking Day on May 31. Round table is to be held on the day of World Anti-Smoking Day on May 30 in Baku.
The aim of the roundtable is to debate tobacco problem and the course of the awareness movement against it. Representatives of Health Ministry, UN agencies, international and local NGOs and Azerbaijan Republic Human Rights Commissioner’s Office (Ombudsman), school psychologists and students will participate in the meeting.
Azerbaijan-Tajikistan teleconference will be held on the subject fighting tobacco use on May 31. The teleconference will debate problems facing during awareness campaigns.
It is noted that on death in ten is result of tobacco use. Smoking kills 5 million every year. If it goes so 10 million people will be victim of tobacco by 2020.
Half of people using tobacco now-approximately 650 thousand will die of tobacco./APA/
