The trial on case of editor-in-chief of “Senet” newspaper Samir Sedagetoglu and publicist Rafig Tagi continued in Sabayel district court, APA reports.
The defendants gave testimonies. Sedagetoglu said that he was unaware of the content of the article “Europe and we” and he was not in Baku when the newspaper was published. He said that he is a Muslim and was brought up in a religious family.
“I swear that I was unaware of the article. But I am responsible as editor-in-chief. I am repentant sincerely, God’s mercy is endless,” he said.
Sedagetoglu regarded his arrest as illegal. A group of religious men protested to him. Religious men from Nardaran insulted Rafi Tagi and Samir Sedagetoglu. Lawyer Isakhan Ashurov protested to it and wanted the judge to take corresponding measures.
Following this, Rafig Tagi gave testimony and the lawyer and public prosecutor Ferhad Rahimov questioned him.
“I called Samir on October 30 at 22.00 and told him that I want my essay “Europe and we” to be published in his newspaper. He said he could not look through it as he was in the village, but could publish it. I first wanted the essay to be published in the “525-ci qezet” newspaper, “Adalat” and “Addim” newspapers. I did not want to insult anybody. The article is against superstitiousness. I did not insult Islam,” he said.
Then, the witnesses were questioned and all of them said that they were unaware of the article. The lawyer asked to end the case, taking into account that the testimonies of the witnesses are not enough. The judge dismissed the petition.
The next court proceeding has been fixed to May 4.
Rafig Tagi and Samir Sedagetoglu were sentenced to two-month imprisonment on November 15 for the article “Europe and we” published in the newspaper on November 1. They face charges under article 283 (create national, racial and religious enmity). /APA/
