Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry: Azerbaijan is strengthening its army
Baku – APA. In 2009 Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry signed a contract with Russia’s Rosoboroneksport company to buy 2 C-300 PMU-2 “Favorit” surface-to-air missile systems. APA reports that top manager of a defense industry enterprise and manager of a plant producing spares of surface-to-air missile systems told the Vedemosti newspaper about it. Manager said the implementation of the contract had already started and would be realized within two years. The representative of Rosoboroneksport refused to comment on the issue. Spokesman for Azerbaijani President Azer Gasimov said he did not have information about it.
The Newspaper writes that in the Soviet times air defense system of Baku was very strong and was left behind only by Moscow and Leningrad. The system began to collapse in the 1990s and now Azerbaijan wants to update it. Russian officer underlines that the sale of C-300 system to Azerbaijan will not make serious changes in the balance of forces between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as neither Azerbaijan, nor Armenia have modern attack aircrafts, cruise missiles or ballistic rockets. The officer considers that very likely Baku wants to secure itself from unexpected events concerning Iran.
Editor of Moscow Defence Mikhail Barabanov says that C-300 PMU-2 system sold to Azerbaijan is worth at least $300 million. Director of the Center for Strategies and Technologies Analysis Ruslan Pukhov notes that Azerbaijan is modernizing its army on account of petrodollars and buying weapons from Ukraine, Belarus, Israel and Republic of South Africa. MiQ-29 fighter jets and armored vehicles have been bought from Ukraine, Spike anti-tank guided missiles from Israel, Mi-24 military helicopters from the Republic of South Africa.
“If Moscow had not sold modern air missiles to Azerbaijan, the Republic of South Africa or Israel would have done it. Therefore, this deal is in accordance with the interests of Russia,” the expert said.
APA tried to learn the view of Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry. Deputy head of the ministry’s press service Teymur Abdullayev said that Azerbaijan is strengthening its army.
