Azerbaijani parliament holds special sitting devoted to 20th anniversary of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

Baku. Elbrus Seyfullayev – APA. Special sitting of the Azerbaijani parliament has started, APA reports. The sitting is devoted to the 20th anniversary of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. UNICEF representative in Azerbaijan Mark Hereward, Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova, heads of NGOs, organizations dealing with children’s rights. Making a keynote speech at the sitting, speaker Ogtay Asadov said children were the most valuable wealth of every nation and mentioned that 2009 was children’s year in Azerbaijan. According to him, Azerbaijan government pays much attention to children, modern legislation on children’s rights has been formed in the country.
“Ten laws have been adopted on children’s rights up to now. Generally, over 70 laws, 10 codes in Azerbaijan mentions children’s rights,” he said.
Asadov said special state programs were being implemented concerning children in the country, committee controlling this field had been established in Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev Foundation cared for children.
Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova, chairman of the parliament’s committee for social policy Hadi Rajabli and UNICEF representative in Azerbaijan Mark Hereward addressed the sitting.
