Baku – APA. The Azadlig newspaper appealed to the European Court of Human Rights against court decisions passed on former Economic Development Minister Heydar Babayev’s suit, Media Rights Institute told APA. The defenders of the newspaper consider that the decisions of the local courts on the Azadlig are illegal. The lawyers of the Media Rights Institute prepared the appeal.
According to the appeal, the courts’ decisions violated the right of freedom of expression and right to a fair trial of the Azadlig and editor-in-chief Ganimat Zahid. The lawyers ask the European Court to recognize violation of article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights (freedom of expression) and article 6 (right to a fair trial), ensure payment of the compensation to them.
Former Economic Development Minister Heydar Babayev sued the editor-in-chief for the article entitled “Have Azerbaijanis assumed wedding expenses of Matthew Bryza?”. Yasamal district court partially granted the appeal. Appeals Court and Supreme Court upheld the decision of the court.
