Second Committee of UN General Assembly adopts draft resolution on Azerbaijan’s initiative

Draft resolution on building connectivity through the Trans-Eurasian Information Superhighway presented by Azerbaijan was unanimously adopted at the next meeting of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Ministry’s press service told APA. Draft resolution devoted to Trans-Eurasian Information Superhighway basing on the proposal of Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies was presented during the 64th session of the UN General Assembly. Beginning from September 2009, Azerbaijani delegation held successful bilateral and multilateral talks on the draft resolution.
The draft resolution admits the importance of information and communication technologies for the economic growth and social development in the world, notes the significant role of Trans-Eurasian Information Superhighway initiative in reducing the digital divide in Eurasia, welcomes Azerbaijani government’s proposal to coordinate regional efforts aimed at realizing this initiative.
The draft resolution presenting a new and leading initiative such as Trans-Eurasian Information Superhighway was supported by various regions and a number of influential countries of the UN joined it as co-authors.
US, Germany, Australia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Afghanistan, China, India, Georgia, Switzerland, Israel, Iraq, Canada, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Moldova, Pakistan, Portugal, Republic of Russian Federation, Slovenia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine and Japan are among them.
