Washington. Isabel Levine – APA. A famous US expert on Turkic countries believes that creating a formal security alliance for Turkic world. Speaking to APA’s Washington DC correspondent, professor of anthropology for Sweet Briar College, Pennsylvania Claudia Chang said that this kind of alliance would be very fruitful. The Turkic world leaders have recently gathered in Nakchivan, Azerbaijan to discuss joint initiatives and ideas, ways of cooperation and reaching out the rest of the world.
Professor believes these countries must create more institutions to study their languages, history and culture, and to extol their Turkic heritage. Speaking of examples of such work, she says: “The Republic of Kazakhstan where I do archaeological fieldwork each summer does extol its Turkic heritage and has strong contacts with other Turkic speaking countries. Also at the L.I. Gumiliev University in Astana they are setting up a department of Turkic studies which includes languages, archaeology, history, and probably modern-day issues pertaining to a Turkic identify”.
Claudia Chang also thinks the Turkic countries; including Azerbaijan, must do more so that the West world knows more about them: “Many of us from the West would be welcome the opportunity to know about the Turkic World. Certainly popular images/media have stressed key figures like Genghis Khan and his impact on world history”.
She says there is also great interest to the Ottoman world. Professor also mentions that “the monuments, sites, and artifacts of the Turkic world are spectacular and would interest people throughout the world. The obvious way to do so is through the media, exhibitions, an emphasis on tourism that highlights the commonality of the Turkic identity in South Caucasus, Central Asia, Mongolia, and Anatolia”.
