European Union lifts arm embargo against Uzbekistan

Baku – APA. European Union is planning to lift arm embargo against Uzbekistan.
According to APA, the European diplomats agreed in Brussels on October 20 to lift the embargo imposed against Uzbekistan after the bloody events in Andijan in 2005. EU foreign ministers will officially declare their decision next week.
EU imposed other sanctions, including ban on Uzbek officials’ visits, restriction of economic relations. Most sanctions were lifted in October, 2008 and only arm embargo remained in force. EU explained its decision with a “progress in the human rights protection in Uzbekistan”.
