The Women’s Bar Association (WBA) has recently been awarded a $96,000 One Woman Initiative (OWI) grant to provide women access to legal advice and training on issues related to women’s rights, including domestic violence, trafficking of women, early marriage, and gender equality. OWI is an international women’s empowerment fund launched May 12, 2008 at the U.S. State Department.
It operates as a joint public-private effort supporting existing initiatives in countries with large Muslim populations. WBA is one of the three initial grantee countries Azerbaijan, Egypt, and India. The one-year project specifically targets four regions of Azerbaijan — Balaken, Guba, Lankaran, and Mingachevir. The grant funds a training program for approximately 400 women to gain greater awareness on women’s rights.
