FM Mammadyarov: Efforts towards Karabakh conflict settlement should be tripled

Efforts towards the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should be tripled, said Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov on Monday.

“All the old and new ideas on the resolution of the conflict are on the negotiating table. We need to develop from these ideas a single document acceptable to both parties. If the problem was easy, it would have been resolved long ago,” Mammadyarov told a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Baku, APA reports.

Referring to the number of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, Mammadyarov said that “if the three co-chairing countries constitute a majority in the UN Security Council, then how it can be possible to increase the number?”

“The first country that springs to mind is Turkey. However, this country is a member of the Minsk Group,” said the minister.

Mammadyarov said he also discussed with his Russian counterpart the April events of last year.

“The situation on the line of contact is unstable and remains tense. We have repeatedly mentioned that we should take a step that requires political will. All know what steps we should take. Simply, the speed of the movement is slow,” he said.

“Azerbaijan demands the implementation of UN Security Council’s resolutions, said Mammadyarov, underscoring the need to triple efforts towards the settlement of the conflict.
