Manchester United and Schalke ease through in Europa League; Fener out

Manchester United wrapped up a commanding 4-0 aggregate victory over St Etienne, winning 1-0 in the away leg thanks to an early Henrikh Mkhitaryan goal and easing into the round of 16, APA reports quoting ESPN.

After a scrappy start, United scored the goal that put the tie beyond any doubt after 16 minutes as the home side gave Juan Mata far too much time and space down the left and he crossed for Mkhitaryan to steer a neat finish inside the far post.

Mkhitaryan limped off soon afterwards with what appeared to be a hamstring problem, Marcus Rashford replacing him as manager Jose Mourinho looked ahead to Sunday's EFL Cup final against Southampton at Wembley.

United had defender Eric Bailly sent off for two bookable offences but held their lead on the night comfortably.

Schalke strolled through to the round of 16 as a 1-1 home draw with PAOK secured a 4-1 aggregate win.

The Bundesliga side were ahead on the night with 23 minutes played when Alessandro Schopf struck after good work by Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, but that cushion lasted only two minutes as the visitors levelled through a Matija Nastasic own goal.

Schalke missed chances to retake the lead before the break, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Nabil Bentaleb both firing wide, and there were no further goals in a low-key second half despite Choupo-Moting again coming close for Schalke and PAOK's Djalma Campos denied by some good defending.

Fenerbahce are out after a 1-1 home draw with Krasnodar saw them defeated 2-1 on aggregate.

Moussa Sow put an early chance wide and another over as Fenerbahce made a bright start -- but they were stunned when Krasnodar took command by scoring from the game's first attempt on target.

It came after seven minutes when Yuri Gasinski took advantage of a poor pass from Martin Skrtel and set up Fedor Smolov to fire home a composed finish.

That left Fenerbahce needing three goals to progress. They scored one shortly before the break when, after the ball had ricocheted around the penalty area, Souza poked home, but despite a couple of good chances after the break for Robin Van Persie, that was as good as it got.
