FIDE intentions to organize friendly tournament between Azerbaijani and Armenian chess players not to be realized

Baku. Agshin Aliyev–APA-Sport. International Chess Federation (FIDE) is planning to organize friendly tournament between Azerbaijani and Armenian chess players, Kirsan Ilumjinov, FIDE President told Russian press, APA-Sport reports.

Ilumjinov said their main goal was the stabilization of the situation in the conflict zone and to normalize relations between the countries at war. FIDE officials are planning to organize three more friendly matches along with Azerbaijan-Armenia match. “100 teenager chess players from the North and South Korea will meet and every 100 chess boards will be placed on the borders of these countries in 44th parallel. We are also planning to organize Israel-Palestine and Moldova-Transdniestria matches. These games will be held under the motto “Chess unites the parts”. I think the friendly matches will assist the normalization of relations between these countries”. Ilumjinov said concrete date of the friendly matches was not specified yet.
In his interview with APA-Sport, Vice-President of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation Faig Hasanov nervously reacted to the FIDE president’s proposal. He emphasized that it was impossible to organize any friendly match between Azerbaijan and Armenia. “This game was on agenda a year ago too, but any game with Armenians is out of the question. Don’t inflate the FIDE President’s words”.
