Strong geomagnetic storm expected in coming days

Strong geomagnetic storm is expected today and in the coming days, Deputy Director for Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory Elchin Babayev told APA.

The Kp rate, one of the key geomagnetic indices, is now 4 (max. rate being 9), but will increase even further, he noted.

According to Babayev, the G1 (minor) storm is expected in the nearest hours and on April 11.

"The maximal scale is G5 and storms in this scale occur 1-2 times in 11 years. A geomagnetic storm is caused by a solar wind shock wave which typically strikes the Earth's magnetic field. Charged plasmatic particles from crown holes easily radiate into space, reaching planets in the solar system, including the Earth. The “guilty” plasmatic wind is currently at a speed of 515km/s,” he added.

Babayev noted that the “Z” component of interplanetary space heading south further worsens cosmic weather, playing the role of catalyst.

“There is also a rise in the atmospheric pressure, which produces a discomfort effect. The storm gets more violent towards the poles, so we’re likely to see images of spectacular polar flashes (Aurora borealis) in the media. The effect on our geographical region will be weaker. Unlike health people, those with chronic heart disease, elderly people and children are advised to stay away from tension and to take preventive measures,” he said.
