Nobel Peace Prize 2017 awarded to International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

The 2017 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) on Friday.

The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was selected by a panel appointed by the Norwegian parliament from a total of 318 known and reported candidates, APA reported citing the Indian Express.

ICAN is a coalition of non-governmental organisations from around 100 different countries around the globe. It has been the leading civil society actor in the effort to achieve a prohibition of nuclear weapons under international law. The Nobel Committee emphasised that the next steps towards attaining a world free of nuclear weapons must involve the nuclear-armed states.
