Increase in male victims of human trafficking, IOM says

The number of male victims of human trafficking has increased in numbers over the past 10 years, said Serhan Aktoprak, Chief of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Azerbaijan.

In 2015 the number of men, who were victims of human trafficking, was more than women, the IOM representative said addressing an event in Baku dedicated to the EU Anti-Trafficking Day.

“So, 84 percent of the trafficking victims in 2006 were women, however now this number has dropped to 43 percent,” he said.

Aktoprak pointed out that 77 percent of trafficking crimes in 2014-2016 were transnational in nature.

“Fifty percent of trafficking victims are 22-37 years old. In 2006-2016, the IOM helped about 50 thousand people,” he added.
