Early marriages reported not only among Azerbaijanis living in Georgia: UNFPA study

In Georgia, early marriages are reported not only among the Azerbaijanis living in the country, according to a study conducted by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Office in Georgia, APA reports.

According to the study, early marriages are neither associated with traditions nor ethnic groups, as it was thought earlier, such cases are reported throughout Georgia’s cities and villages.

Lela Bakradze, head of the UNFPA Office in Georgia, stated that according to the practice of early marriage, stereotypes which have spread throughout the country promoting these cases depend largely on gender norms

It should be noted that in recent years there have been opinions on early marriages in Georgia being exclusive to the Azerbaijanis living in the country.

According to the report of the Georgian Ombudsman, 75 teenagers stopped their education due to marriage, while 835 teenagers became parents in 2017.
