Azerbaijani court pronounces verdict against former navy chief


A court on Friday pronounced a verdict against former commander of the Azerbaijani Naval Forces, Vice-Admiral Shahin Sultanov, who is charged with forgery and embezzlement on a large scale.

 

Under the court verdict, Shahin Sultanov was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison, and his sentenced suspended for three years of probation.  

 

A public prosecutor had earlier sought for 13 years of imprisonment for Shahin Sultanov.

 

According to the Republican Military Prosecutor's Office, a number of irregularities had been found out during an inspection at the Naval Forces, and the Republican Military Prosecutor's Office initiated a criminal case on the matter.

 

Several persons accused of committing illegal acts, including former Commander of the Azerbaijani Naval Forces, Vice Admiral Shahin Sultanov, were put in 3-month pre-trial detention under the verdict of the Baku Military Court on April 23 based on the presentation of the Republican Military Prosecutor's Office. Sultanov faced charges under the Criminal Code’s articles #179.3.2 (misappropriation – in large size) and 313 (official forgery). The investigation into the crimes is continuing.

 

The Baku Military Court considered a petition on commuting Shahin Sultanov’s pre-trial detention to house arrest. The court upheld the petition and Sultanov was released.
