Azerbaijan set to abrogate imprisonment for illegal trafficking of medications

The penalty of imprisonment for illegal trafficking of medications will be abrogated in Azerbaijan.

In this respect, an amendment has been proposed to be made to Item 1 of Article 200-1 (illegal trafficking of medications) of the Criminal Code, APA reported.

According to the draft amendment, the penalty of two-year imprisonment for the large-scale sale, storage [with intent to sell], or import of expired, low-quality medications of unknown origin which do not meet the requirements of normative-technical documents and are not state-registered, as well as the sale and storage or import of illegally made medications shall be replaced with the penalty of two-year restriction of liberty.

The penalty of restriction of liberty is new and is not served in prison.

The draft amendment will be tabled at the parliament’s plenary meeting on October 20.
