Akif Chovdrov: I will begin hunger strike - UPDATED

Baku’s Sabunchu district court on Monday continued the trial in the criminal case involving Major General Akif Chovdarov, former head of the main energy and transport security directorate under the liquidated Ministry of National Security (MNS) of Azerbaijan, and other people arrested alongside him.

A former employee of the ministry and an employee of the State Security Service testified at the trial as witnesses, APA reported. They said they were welcoming the persons coming to the ministry and accompanying them to upper floors.

Chovdarov’s attorneys raised objections to the results of examination. They said the examination rejected their demand for a holter monitor and physicians for examining Chovdarov.

Chovdarov said he doesn’t want formal examination. “If the court rejects these demands, I will refuse to attend the next trial and will begin a hunger strike,” he added.

The trial will be resumed on Feb. 1.

Baku’s Sabunchu district court on Monday continued the trial in the criminal case involving Major General Akif Chovdarov, former head of the main energy and transport security directorate under the liquidated Ministry of National Security (MNS) of Azerbaijan, and other people arrested alongside him.

Two physicians of the Central Customs Hospital gave testimonies upon the episode of victim Mubariz Mammadov at the trial presided over by judge Chairman of Baku Military Court Habib Hasanov, APA reported.

They said Mammadov underwent surgery and stand was placed in his heart. The physicians said they did not have information that Mammadov had been beaten. Chovdarov said he did not beat Mammadov. He said he cried at him and demanded not to lie.

Mammadov said Chovdarov had beaten him.

Attorney Sadiq Rasulov told reporters that Chovdarov has health problems and therefore frequent breaks are being taken at the trial.

The trial will be continued later in the day.

According to the bill of indictment, Chovdarov bought an area of 18 acre from entrepreneur Mubariz Mammadov through Rafiq Taghiyev at a price of 600,000 dollars and gave a half of this amount in advance. But it later became clear that the land had been sold to two persons—Mubariz Mammadov and the Ministry of Youth and Sport. Chovdarov, after finding out that a state structure was involved in the affair, took Mammadov to his room and tortured him there and demanded his money from him. Finally, he was able to grant the land to someone close to him.

Chovdarov gave detailed testimony about this matter, saying he was not a client to the land.

“Rafiq Taghiyev came to the MNS and complained about Mubariz Mammadov, saying 300,000 dollars had been defrauded from him. To solve the problem, we called Mubariz Mammadov to the office and had a talk with him. I did not beat him. I just advised him to return the money. After that, I haven’t know what happened, whether the money was returned or not,” he said.
