28% of Azerbaijani women believe men have the right to beat their wives

The Azerbaijani Health Ministry’s Public Health and Reforms Center (PHRC) has held an event dedicated to the International Day of Non-Violence.

PHRC methodologist doctor Raisa Ahmadova said that they held a survey aimed at studying the characteristics of and reasons behind violence against women in Azerbaijan, APA reported.

She noted that the survey was conducted in Lankaran, Baylagan, Fuzuli and Shamkir among 400 women aged over 18.

“The respondents were asked under what circumstances men would have the right to beat their wives. These circumstances include the woman burning the meal, arguing with her husband, leaving home without her husband’s permission, failing to take care of her children, and refusing to have intercourse. 24.3% of the women think the man has the right to beat his wife when she has left home without permission, 18.9% said think the woman can be beaten if she does not take care of the children, and 13.6% believe the woman can be beaten for an argument. 8% women said the man has the right to beat his wife if she refuses to have intercourse with him and 5% think burning the meal would be a fair reason for the man to beat the wife. Overall, roughly 28% of the respondents believe the woman can be beaten in the case of at least one of the aforementioned reasons,” Ahmadova added.

It was emphasized that anyone facing violence should call Azerbaijan Child Hot Line Service (tel: 012–480–22–80) and Hot Line Service against Violence (012–480-38-75).
