Russia’s St. Petersburg hosts media summit

A summit of world news agencies was held on Thursday in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The TASS-sponsored media summit, which took place on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), involved the heads of nearly 30 biggest news outlets from countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Italy, Japan, Spain, the United States and Vietnam, APA’s Russia bureau reports.

TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman and Great Britain’s Press Association Group CEO Clive Marshall moderated the event.

Azerbaijan was represented at the summit by AZERTAC state information agency, APA and Report news agencies.

One of the topics discussed at the summit, titled “The Future of Journalism”, was the creation of mechanisms to prevent the spread of fake news.

TASS Director General Sergei Mikhailov emphasized the importance of creating mechanisms to prevent the spread of fake news in media.

"Media outlets have for a long time been using social networks as sources of information. Users get information about many events from social media faster than the media. It’s not possible to deny social networks, nor is it right. The job of professional media is to learn how to maximize benefits from social networks," he added.
