Court refuses to commute Afgan Mukhtarli’s detention to house arrest

The Baku Court of Appeal considered on Thursday an appeal filed by journalist Afgan Mukhtarli against the court decision on not allowing him to house arrest, APA reported.

Muktarli previously filed an appeal asking the court to commute his detention to house arrest.

However, the court rejected his appeal at the trial presided over by judge Mirpasha Huseynov, APA reports.

Mukhtarli’s appeal was rejected by the court of first instance either.

Mukhtarli was detained by officers of the State Border Service at 22:40 (local time) on May 29 in the territory of Balakan district after illegally crossing the Azerbaijani border. At the time of his detention, Mukhtarli showed resistance. During the inspection, a large sum of money was found on him.

He faced charges under Articles 318 (illegal border crossing), 206 (smuggling) and 315.2 (resistance or application of violence concerning the representative of authority) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
