Draft Convention bans military presence of non-party countries in Caspian Sea

The participants of the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea should remain committed to the principle of non-presence in the Caspian Sea of the armed forces of non-party countries.

This is reflected in the draft Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea, which was approved by the Russian government on Friday, APA reported citing RIA Novosti.

The draft Convention notes that the activities of the Caspian Sea littoral states will be governed by the principles of territorial integrity, respect for sovereignty, non-use of force or threat of force, mutual respect, cooperation and non-interference in each other’s affairs.

According to the document, the parties will use the Caspian Sea for peaceful purposes, solve problems by peaceful means, maintain the military balance in the Caspian Sea and carry out military build-up within reasonable limits, taking into account the interests of all parties to the Convention.

The parties undertake the commitment to not provide their territories for the purpose of aggression and military actions against the countries of the Convention, reads the document.
