Israeli Embassy in Baku reacts to protests over Trump’s Jerusalem declaration

Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish people for 3,000 years and the capital of Israel for about 70 years, Avital Rosenberg, spokesperson for Israel’s Embassy in Baku, told APA.

She was commenting on the protests that broke out following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Israel is committed to the status quo in sacred places and will continue to provide freedom of worship for Jews, Christians and Muslims, noted the diplomat. “Israel is committed to peace among all its neighbors, including Palestine,” added Avital Rosenberg.

U.S. President Donald Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy on Dec. 6 and recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, despite warnings from around the world that the gesture further drives a wedge between Israel and the Palestinians.

In a speech at the White House, Trump said his administration would also begin a process of moving the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which is expected to take years.
