UN does not justify hopes of peoples: Latvia’s ex-president

The United Nations does not justify the hopes of peoples, and the situation in the sphere of conflict resolution also shows this, Latvia’s former president, co-chair of the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre Vaira Vike-Freiberga said.

She made the remarks at the 5th Global Baku Forum, titled “The Future of International Relations: Power and Interests”, which kicked off in Baku on March 16.

Good governance, the ex-president said, implies equality of all members of society before the law.

She noted that a country becomes stable depending on the extent to which its citizens perceive governance, otherwise terrorism will raise its head and many other problems will arise.

Underlining Azerbaijan’s favorable geopolitical position, Vike-Freiberga said this country, thanks to its energy resources, can become a transport hub between the West and the East, the North and the South.

She stressed that in Azerbaijan religion is separated from the state.

Latvia’s ex-president continued: “As for the international relations, the Azerbaijani president also noted that there is no full compliance here. Larger countries will, of course, have a greater impact. When a president wins election in the U.S., he thinks his country has grown too much, promises to cut taxes. Therefore, people living in countries in a difficult situation, are seeking a way out. Heads of states should lead the people behind them. If the government cannot convince its citizens of the correct governance of the country, then the country's situation will not be good. After the World War II, European countries decided to work together, the EU was created and it became a good model. In this forum, we will learn what good governance and balance mean.”
